A Day of Remembrance
Summer has finally given way to autumn. Our garden colors have passed from flower to foliage. It’s a time of endings that prompts us to reflect on the season past.
One most memorable day this year took place in mid July when members of the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) gathered at Arlington National Cemetery for the 18th annual Renewal & Remembrance
To Maintain and Beautify the Final Resting Place of Our Soldiers
Established in 1997, the Renewal & Remembrance event is a day of service in honor of those who gave their lives for this country. This year, more than 400 NALP members joined hundreds of local volunteers to perform landscape maintenance work that included arborist services, landscape design/plant installation, turf care and irrigation installation.
The event has grown each year since it began. This year the organizers introduced special projects for children that included an education program, planting of native grasses and perennials, arranging flowers for graves, and participation in the wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Sharing Experience and Ideas
We are proud of our Director of Landscape Maintenance, Tom Kniezewski, for his passionate dedication to this event. Tom has been involved with the Renewal & Remembrance for six years and each year has taken on more responsibility for organizing this massive event. As a key member of the planning committee Tom led the effort to get five tractor-trailers full of equipment and materials on site three days before the event. Tom feels that many in the membership share his commitment to the event and to the NALP.
The Landscape Industry is close knit. We all try to help each other out by sharing experience and ideas about what works or where they have problems. It’s a well-attended event and people come from all over. Tom Kniezewski, Surrounds Landscape Maintenance Director
NALP membership represents 100,000 landscape maintenance and lawn care industry professionals who design, build and maintain green spaces. The association advocates on issues impacting its members and offers mentoring, education and professional certification programs that promote best practices.
