The landscape architect’s vision is rooted in the present but takes a long view to the future.”
The Design of Place
The Surrounds team’s approach to landscape design and construction results in thoughtfully planned and meticulously crafted outdoor living environments that settle into place, take root and thrive. Our designed landscape becomes beloved places for family play, celebration, or contemplation. These living landscapes are designed to be lived in — not just looked at — every day.

What we learned from working with Surrounds is that it’s important to pick the architect first. You had so many ideas that we hadn’t thought of. That truly shaped the vision for the design.”

Preliminary Landscape Design Process
ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS at the outset of a landscape design project is imperative to success.
In the first meeting, we ask a lot of questions because we want to understand what you like, don’t like, and might like. That’s how we narrow down the endless possibilities for your landscape to arrive at a design plan that is right for you.
We’ll talk and walk your property together. We’ll discuss challenges and point out opportunities. We may talk about landscape architecture and how it relates to your home architecture. This assessment will help your landscape architect find the key that unlocks the potential of your home and its surroundings.
By the end of this first meeting, you will have a picture in mind of the landscape design we could create together. The next step will be to put that imagined landscape on paper.
Conceptual Landscape Design
THE DISCUSSION CONTINUES. Now we are moving in a specific direction. Your landscape architect presents several concepts that meet the goals of our shared vision. We may talk about plant species, trees or functional design details. We may consider the value of features such as outdoor kitchens, waterfalls, or a swimming pool. We may discuss changing the approach to your house to improve the way it presents to the street. All options are on the table. We pin a preliminary budget on all of this to make sure we are on track with your expectations and budgetary comfort zone.
Landscape Design: Final Site Plan & Construction
WE PUT OUR BEST IDEAS TOGETHER in a final site plan that supports all the technical requirements of the new landscape design. We complete construction documentation and finalize the project estimate for the project.
Landscape construction begins. Our highly motivated landscape architects are organized entirely around installing your landscape as envisioned by you — and to the highest standard. We communicate with you during the entire process and keep you up to date on our progress from groundbreaking to finishing touch.
Maintaining Your New Landscape Design
WHAT’S THIS GOT TO DO WITH LANDSCAPE DESIGN? Everything. Your new outdoor living environment is going to require regular maintenance — and who better to provide the expert care and attention your landscape investment deserves than the company that helped create it? The Surrounds Garden Management Division is invested in the continued health and success of your gardens and landscape systems. It makes good sense to plan for basic maintenance once construction is completed.
WE’RE DONE! Designed with year-round usability in mind, you now have your own special place to experience the changing of the seasons. We recommend you throw a huge kick-off party and invite us to it. We’ll be sure to point out all of the terrific ideas you had and that we incorporated into the project.
